Accepting All with God's Unconditional Love

2013 Youth Mission Trip

The Confirmation Youth went on a 5 day Mission trip to Matthew 25 Ministries in Cedar Rapids, IA.  Matthew 25 ministers to 3 neighborhoods that are very low income, and were hit hard by the 2008 flood.  Matthew 25 administers a Block by Block program to rehab and redevelop flooded homes.  Homes that could not be rebuilt were purchased and torn down and the lots used for urban farming.  These urban farms produce fresh food for the community that is in the middle of a "food desert".  They also teach gardening at the local schools and teach families about nutrition through the school gardens.

Our group worked on the urban farm weeding, composting, mulching and harvesting for 6 hours each day.  We learned a lot about the root causes of poverty in Iowa and in the USA.  We lived on what a family living on minimum wage would spend on food -- $3 per day per person!  And we soon discovered that this was NOT enough food to keep us going, feeling good, and focused.  We could cheat -- a person really living in poverty could not!   We visited the African American Museum of Cedar Rapids and we visited the Czech village on our last day.

Thank you for supporting the youth mission trip!
